[SF’s Top 5 Coffee Shops – San Francisco, CA]

November 17, 2015

It’s a known fact that I function poorly without caffeine so when in a new city I make sure to find the top spots to make my coffee watering holes. Below is my ranked list of top five favorite spots since relocating to the West Coast:

#1: Andytown Coffee Roasters

Winner: Most Unique

Where: 3655 Lawton Street, SF 94112

This cute little coffee shop is worth the trek to an area I will deem Outer Sunset although it is arguably just as easily be Ocean Beach The real winner here is the Snowy Plover, a sparkling water espresso combo topped with whipped cream. We paired ours with a seasonally appropriate butternut squash scone with onions and goat cheese.

#2: Sightglass Coffee

Winner: Most Chic

Where: 270 7th Street, SF 94103

If you’re going to go for it, go for the two storied SOMA location. Sightglass offers up an affogato bar at this location. For those unfamiliar with this treat, an affogato is a scoop of ice cream or gelato with a shot of piping hot espresso. The delicious combo is only made better by the Salt + Straw Ice Cream they pair with.

#3: The Mill

Winner: Best Snacks

Where: 736 Divisadero Street, SF 94117

So the coffee is not my absolute favorite but as it is Four Barrel it is quite good to say the least. This place serves up some of SF’s trendiest snack du jour – toast. This beautiful giant toast comes in a variety of bread types and toppings. My tip? Try their homemade nutella with sea salt. They also have a larger selection of pastries like (our favorite) a pistachio croissant and BYOB pizza nights on Mondays.

#4: Z011 Coffee

Winner: The Newcomer

Where: 1035 Fillmore Street SF, 94115

This is a new coffee shop for the city but I wanted to include it in my round up because it’s just that good. This Ethiopian coffee shop offers up delicious almond cookies to dip in your very earthy and warm cuppa. If you’re feeling adventurous the shop also sells pre-roast coffee beans for $6.50 -$7.50 a bag.

#5:Blue Bottle Coffee

Winner: Best Overall

Where: 1 Ferry Building, SF 94111

There are several outposts of this coffee chain that has now gained so much in popularity it has spread nationally and even internationally. The best coffee to order here is hands down the New Orleans – a chicory, coffee combo that will have you wanting to take the next flight to Cafe Du Monde or Vietnam for an endless supply of this delicious recipe. Make sure to pair this with one of their signature, warm waffles.

Honorable Mention: Philz Coffee

Winner: Most San Franciscan

Where: 549 Castro Street, SF 94114

You can’t do a round up of San Francisco coffees without Philz. Albeit not the strongest cup, you’re guaranteed to find something so flavorful and a truly unique drink recipe. A go-to for me is the Mint Mojito which entails a fistful of real mint leaves. This is the best spot for someone that prefers their coffee mocha over black. It’s got that uniquely SF crunchy granola vibe in the best way.
