[Hiking Joshua Tree – Palm Desert, CA]

June 4, 2016

With Joshua Tree National Park being so close, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go. Having a rental car here is amazing especially if you’re planning on venturing out a little bit further like we did.

Hiking Joshua Tree

I highly recommend doing the Ryan Mountain trail which is about 3 miles roundtrip but almost completely vertical. I have never before experienced altitude sickness but at one point I was like “um, I need to just sit”. While I didn’t feel tired i just need to sit and breathe for awhile. You’ll start at a pretty high elevation and the gain is about 1200 feet. This is the second highest peak in Joshua Tree. I’ll put it this way – the summit is 5,458 ft high so I recommend taking a nap at the top and pretend you need to be carried back down. 😉 Just kidding…

There are some gnarled and crooked trees. The dessert landscape is like a combo Mars/the movie "Holes" type landscape.

Thousand Palm Oasis

My mom is convinced that my grandfather likes to visit in the form of a Monarch butterfly so it should come as no surprise I’ve also lost my mind because despite being in the middle of nowhere in the desert, surrounded by palm trees, I pointed and went “Hi Grandpa”.
