[Exploring Downtown Carmel – Carmel, CA]

June 28, 2016

We’re already planning a return trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea. As a couple that finds it impossible to relax, it was so nice finding a small seaside town where we could do nothing but relax. I’d write more of a description but I think the pictures speak for themselves. While I’m not a huge proponent of staying downtown, visiting it is very much worth your time.

Early morning and we made our way downtown after eating a quick bite at the hotel’s delicious breakfast. These scones were fresh out of the oven and I’m feeling regretful as I write this that I didn’t have more at the time.

Scones are the best way to start any breakfast and/or conversation.

I feel like Peter Rabbit would have loved this hotel.

We made our way downtown and stopped by the Cottage of Sweets, the Carmel Bakery, and Carmel Coffee House as we toured downtown. Don’t worry, we did not eat at all these places.

There’s nothing like catching a sunset in Carmel. I’d say this is the best argument for staying in the Carmel Highlands rather than downtown. The cliff side views were breathtaking so I thought I’d share a few.

The next day we made our way down to Carmel’s 17 Mile drive. If you’re not familiar, this is a stunning 17  mile stretch of nothing but views. Portions of the drive were temporarily closed on that day, so we took an alternate route that had great results.  Note: Unclear if we were actually on the 17-mile drive or unbelievably close and seeing the same views. If you want to commit to the whole drive I believe you pay a fee but you can also bike it which is what we’d like to do during our next visit. We got out at the exit for the drive but instead took the right at the fork to route 68. This takes you to Asilomar Beach.

Oh, hello shortcut to a part of the drive!

We had not had a cup of coffee that wasn’t a diner coffee this whole weekend. Am I being a snob? Sure. Also, though, I really need strong coffee because I work very early and can no longer function on anything else. We were so happy to swing by Bright Coffee which was very close nearby. Comments on Foursquare carry rave reviews like “Very potent hipster vibe. Coffee is the lighter Oregon profile. If you know Verve you will enjoy.” and “Get a coffee in a handmade ceramic mug and walk around the store looking at things.” In fact there were several votes of support for ceramic mugs so it should come of no surprise we messed this up and got our coffee in a to-go cup.
