Unlike our travels in Japan and Taipei, we found Bangkok hasn’t fully fostered a coffee culture. Being caffeine fiends we still tried quite a few. Also this was the only way for us to combat humidity, something we’ve fallen out of touch with since our move to San Francisco. Below are our picks for top five coffee shops if you find yourself in Bangkok.
#1: Rocket Coffeebar
Winner: Best Overall
Where: 46/12 Sukhumvit Soi 49. (At Piman 49), Sukhumvit Road (there is more than one location!)
Visually, this one is the best looking. It was practically made for an instagram. After about a week of eating terribly you will desperately need this and cave and order a bowl of something healthy. That being said you will also look longingly from your seat at the mysterious pastry they call a cinnamon bun.
#2: Casa Lapin
Winner: Coziest Coffee
So we didn’t go to the main outpost of this very cute cafe. We were just down the street after our breakfast at Rocketbar and wanted to swing by Casa Lapin. This was one of the best croissants we had on our trip, flaky and warm. Our iced coffee was great as well, the barista insisted on remaking it after Ben drank his (free of charge of course) since she didn’t quite like the way the first one turned out. This tucked away and overly hospitable cafe would have us for sure coming back again.
Winner: Best non-coffee coffee drinks
This one wasn’t even on my list. We stumbled into it after (much to our dismay) the coffee shop we were actually headed too was closed for renovations. I highly encourage you to get off the beaten path drinks here. Blink and you’ll miss the sidewalk stall for this outpost but you’ll regret it. Worth ordering up at the bar and sitting in the tucked away section with seating and….air conditioning!
#4: Ceresia Coffee Roasters
Winner: Most diverse
This one according to Ben had the most caffeine but I just liked how clean and simple it was. They had coffee beans from so many different places it was fun to look at them and choose what you were in the mood for that day.
#5: Gallery Drip Coffee
Winner: Most Artsy
We loved the mall like building this was in. I had an amazing sour soda while Ben had a real coffee. It was hard not to buy coffee accessories in the store let alone the whole mall that is basically a living Etsy mall of modern crafty shops.
Bonus Round! After You Dessert Cafe
Winner: Best Dessert
Where: Thonglor 13 (J Avenue)
We wound up here one night after a not so good dinner experience. Rare but this really happens in any city. I needed a sugar fix and let me just tell you. The Shibuya Honey Toast. Is. The. Best. Ever. That is all, just go and find out for yourself. Technically not a coffee pick but such a good stop for a coffee break and crazy dessert.
Not seen here but was on our short list: Diva-licious Coffee Cafe, Gram(below), One Ounce for Onion, Mr. Jones Orphanage, Hungry Bear, (un)Fashion Cafe and Little Spoon *probably google this one for the adorable pictures
